About Our Chapter

Our chapter is a small rural chapter in Buffalo, Missouri. Recently, we placed four signs on the roads leading into our town, to promote our DAR presence in Buffalo. The community Veterans Day Parade in November is a beloved activity that our chapter members embrace and participate in each year. Following the parade, chapter members enjoy serving lunch at the Veterans Luncheon at the local Disabled American Veterans Hall. We enthusiastically participate in the Veterans Outreach program at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital in Columbia, Missouri, by donating food items for their pantry. Our hearts and donations go to those veterans who choose to remain homeless in order to stay with their beloved companion dogs, with whom they cannot part. In support of education, we are proud to have sponsored a DAR National Essay Contest winner from our community. We look forward to growth for our chapter with new members as we promote the DAR ideals of historic preservation, education, and patriotism in our community.

Chapter History

The Meyongo Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on February 5, 1982. The chapter’s name honors the Niangua River, a prominent natural feature in Dallas County. The Osage Indians, who lived in this region for centuries, named many natural landmarks, and their language continues to shape local geography through names like Niangua and Meyongo. The river’s original Osage name was translated to English as “Bug River” or “winding stream of many springs.” When settlers arrived in Missouri, they attempted to reproduce the Osage pronunciation of “Niangua,” resulting in a variety of spellings and pronunciations. Over time, as settlers adapted the Osage pronunciation, “Niangua” was sometimes spoken as “Meyongo,” which became a cherished local term and ultimately inspired the chapter’s name. This legacy, handed down through generations, reflects both the Osage influence and the evolving local traditions surrounding the river and its name.
