About the Chapter

The Niangua Chapter, NSDAR, supports local causes including Citizens Against Domestic Violence, Head Start, and the local homeless shelter by donating books, games, candy, cleaning supplies, and monetary gifts. We sponsor sixth grade classrooms with donations of school supplies, books for the classroom library, and gift cards. The chapter participates in the DAR Good Citizens Award which honors high school seniors. Veterans are honored by sponsoring the Dale Blair Cemetery in Camdenton, Missouri, for Wreaths Across America. As a service project, members mapped the graves of veterans buried there. Members have recorded over 575 hours of community service by participating in activities such as volunteering at the public library, doing needlework, making fidget quilts for persons with cognitive issues and those in hospice, knitting, and quilting. Other community service hours include assisting the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars with Bingo, serving meals, riding in parades, and photographing special events. Members also read aloud to young children, provide transportation to neighbors who do not drive, and assist in cleaning a camp for individuals with cognitive disabilities.

Chapter History

The Niangua Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on February 26, 1957, at the Arrowhead Lodge in Lake Ozark, Missouri, with Mrs. Todd Crawford as the organizing regent. The chapter was named for the Niangua River which was formed from the spring-fed Big and Little Niangua Rivers joining with Linn Creek and flowed into the Osage River at the site of the former town of Linn Creek, Missouri. Historians do not agree on the origin of the name Niangua. It is said to be from an Indian phrase ‘ne-on-go,’ meaning “I won’t go away,” expressing the Indian’s reluctance to leave his beautiful native hunting and fishing lands.

Do you have a Patriot ancestor?

Researching your family lineage is a major step in becoming a member of the DAR. Documentation proving your direct lineage to a Patriot ancestor who fought in the American Revolutionary War or who aided in achieving American independence is required for membership.

All known DAR Patriot ancestors are cataloged in the NSDAR Genealogical Research System (GRS), an online collection of databases that preserve historical documents and records. The DAR provides this ever-growing wealth of research information as a resource tool for lineage and ancestry exploration.
